More cuts could come to oil and gas

The oil and gas industry in Alberta is not doing well, according to an economist who recently said that employees should be prepared to see a lot more cuts and job terminations in the future. There have been many layoffs already in 2015, and some people were happy to see the rate of firings slowing down, but the economist thinks that things are not quite over with yet.

He did say that the main hump is probably done with, so the mass firings of this year could be done. He just warned that that by no means indicates that all remaining jobs are safe.

Some companies have cut down their size very dramatically. For instance, there were around 1,000 layoffs at Suncor Energy. TransCanada Corp. also got rid of around 185 workers. The energy sector was one of the hardest hit when looking at these reductions.

Employees who still have their jobs should know what steps companies must legally follow, as they still have rights and obligations, even in these times. For example, employment law in Canada states that the government has to be told about the firings in advance if 50 or more people are going to be fired. This has to happen within a period of four weeks, and it has to take place at just one location. Companies cannot simply cut hundreds of employees from the same location, on the same day, without this advance warning.

If you've been fired and you think it was done unfairly for any reason, be sure that you know what types of legal action you can take.
