Alberta family files lawsuit in death of armoured guard

The wife and daughter of an armoured car guard who was fatally shot in a June 2012 robbery is suing the shooter along with three other parties who allegedly failed to provide adequate safety and security measures that may have prevented the guard's death. The guard was shot and killed in 2012 as the victim and co-workers were placing money into a machine at the bank.

The shooting also took the lives of two co-workers and seriously injured a third co-worker. The guards were shot by a fellow employee who was allegedly having financial problems and is reported to have placed $64,000 on his mom's kitchen table following the shooting. The suspect was taken into custody two days later as he attempted to cross the border into Lynden, Washington, carrying over $300,000 cash in a backpack.

The $925,000 lawsuit claims that the University of Alberta failed to provide adequate security measures at its Hub Mall and failed to properly monitor Hub Mall for dangerous people. Additionally, the suit alleges that Toronto Dominion Bank, located inside Hub Mall, was negligent in the way it hired contractors, such as the guard's employer. The suit also alleges that the guard's employer, G4S Cash Solutions, knew or should have known that the suspect was not psychologically fit to carry out the duties of an armed guard, placing the other guards in a dangerous situation.

Employers have a duty to provide a safe work environment for their employees, and failure to do might be considered negligence, depending on the circumstances. Anyone who has been injured or otherwise damaged because of someone else's negligence may want to speak with a lawyer to see if it would be possible to seek compensation through civil litigation.
